Becoming
a Tutor
Our team of tutors visits pre-screened
students with a disability which prevents their attendance at our computer
school classes. With training, instruction packets and handouts, printed
or carried on a USB memory stick, they bridge the gap in skills and confidence
to allow students to connect to friends, family and information using
their computer.
Tutor training candidates must be 55 or
older, computer savvy and have a functioning knowledge of Windows or MAC
computers and their common applications.

In this course, you will learn the
main components and features of the most commonly used computer programs
with an emphasis on those that encourage social interaction (e-mail, internet,
documents). You will learn to how to become an effective tutor for persons
with disabilities through hands-on exercises in a computer lab and through
discussion with an experienced instructor/presenter. It is expected that
following the course, the tutor will be available to assist a student
once a week to learn how to function and/or better utilize their computer
in their own homes.
Time Commitment & Course Highlights
The tutor training course features six
- 2 hour instruction periods of refresher material and updates as well
as tutoring tips on such subjects as: - Internet search - E-mail - photos
and attachments - avoiding viruses and scams - social interaction with
others (Facebook, chat rooms, etc.) - file management & creating documents.
The instructor will provide a lesson for
each topic and may suggest practice sessions to be done at home in between
sessions. The tutor-student should have access to a computer at home with
Microsoft Office 2003, 2007 or 2010 as well as an e-mail account and internet
access.
Our
computer programs are student-centred. Personal success is the foundation
of our day-to-day activities. For people with disabilities, having good
computer skills can open doors previously closed and help to overcome
barriers to independence.
