Disability
Parking Permits
Applications
for parking permits are available at the Nanaimo & Region Disability
Resource Centre, at your doctor's office, or download the form here.
These parking permits allow persons living with a disability, who are
unable to walk more than 100 metres without difficulty, to use designated
"Disabled Parking Only" or "Handicapped Parking" sites.
General Information
There is an $20.00 processing
fee for permanent and for temporary
parking permits (both new and renewed). We accept cash, cheque or money
order - and, in the office only: debit, Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
The Centre is not set up to take payment by debit/credit card payment over the phone. All fees incurred in obtaining doctor signatures or other supporting documentation
are the responsibility of the applicant, and are not part of our processing
fee.
A permit cannot be issued
without a doctor's authorization, and only one permit can be issued per
person. There are two types of permits: Your doctor determines which
type of parking permit you are issued, either permanent or temporary,
when he completes Part B of the application form. Once the doctor
has indicated whether the parking permit is to be permanent or temporary,
the Centre cannot change what he has authorized.
Regardless of the type of
parking permit which you have been issued, you must sign the back.
As the registered holder, you are responsible for ensuring that this parking
permit is used in an appropriate manner. Every parking permit holder
is provided with an Information Sheet that lists the do's and dont's of
the program. Misuse of the parking permit may result in the permit
being revoked, and no further parking permits will be issued to you.
Applications received by mail are processed and delivered to the post office within 24-48 hours. If you stop by the Centre, your permit can be issued in as little as 10 minutes! The online form to print or download is here.
Permanent Permit:
This parking permit must
be renewed every three years from the date issued. We will mail you a
renewal letter for you to sign and return to us with the fee. A doctor's
authorization is NOT required for renewal.
Temporary Permit:
This parking permit has
a valid period of six months or one year from the date of issuance based
upon your doctor's assessment. We will mail you a renewal letter.
If you feel you still need the use of the parking permit, you will need
to take the renewal letter to your doctor for a new authorization.
When this has been completed, return the renewal letter to us with the
fee.
All permit renewal letters are mailed about one month before expiry. It is the responsibility
of the parking permit holder to advise DRC of any changes of address and/or
phone number.
